The Strip of Chestnut Street Between 18th & 19th Might Be Construction Central This Year
The block with CVS, Boyd’s, and more will get very noisy if construction moves forward as planned.
The stretch of Chestnut Street, better known locally as the block with Boyd’s on it, has an odd mix of open and closed retail stores, with few residential homes above them. That’s about to change although when is probably the bigger question.
Some construction has been happening at the Valiant building, a historical building that’s known for its pretty Italianate/Art Deco architecture at 1822 – 1824 Chestnut Street.
Pearl Properties bought the property back in 2020 with the intention of building a “slender” 49-story residential building. Recently, Je Suis Jolie moved into the store smack in the middle of the two entrances.
Then Goodman Properties, a commercial real estate company that has owned the building for over 30 years, announced they were going to build a 47-story residential building on top of the CVS at the corner, which apparently used to be a theatre. Check out the lovely vintage photos below.
The existing CVS store is expected to close and supposedly come back but it’s hard to believe they will. However, with the 16th and Chestnut St Rite Aid closing, the neighborhood will need another bodega-like store, although the city-sized Target in my opinion does a pretty good job.
NOTE: This post has been updated to reflect that the block is between 18th and 19th streets, and NOT 19th and 20th. Sorry for the confusion :/
