From Vacant to Vision: Jabal Coffee House Renderings Reveal a Jaw-Dropping Future for 1524 Chestnut
Late-night hours, single-origin Yemeni coffee, and a facade that belongs in a design magazine — 1524 Chestnut Street’s next chapter looks pretty incredible.
If you’ve walked past the old Liberty Travel space lately and thought “that spot deserves better,” well, good news: your patience is about to be rewarded in a big way!
Thanks to fellow Rambler Brian Bernetich who shared the gorgeous renderings of Jabal Coffee House, the third Yemeni coffee shop headed to our neighborhood coming to 1524 Chestnut Street this Fall. And we’ve never wished harder for anything recently (yes, even for this stupid winter to finally end) as much as we’re hoping these renderings will come 100% to life because it looks like they are creating something truly special.

If you’re not familiar with Yemeni coffee culture, here’s the short version: these aren’t your “grab a latte and run” spots. They’re designed to be genuine third spaces, i.e., community gathering places where the coffee is exceptional, the atmosphere encourages you to actually stay, and the hours often stretch well into the evening. The fact that we’re getting three of them, each with their own distinct design and energy, within just one year is pretty nice!
A Storefront That Looks Like it Belongs in a Wes Anderson Film
The renderings Brian shared are truly cool. The exterior features these flowing wood slats that curve and ripple across the entire storefront like, well, mountains. Which tracks, because “Jabal” means “mountain” in Arabic.

The sculptural facade creates this incredible sense of depth and movement, the kind of thing you’d expect to find in a design magazine, not sandwiched between shops on Chestnut. The mountain logo sits right within the wooden landscape, and the way the slats frame the windows and entrance makes it feel like you’re discovering a hidden oasis. It’s giving Grand Budapest Hotel meets Yemeni architecture, and we love it.
Inside the Mountain
Step inside and the mountain theme keeps going, but with a modern, airy twist. The interior rendering shows a curved counter surrounded by white and wood furniture, all under these gorgeous pendant lights that give off an almost starlit feel.

That signature mountain-wave wall design carries through the whole space, tying it all together. It’s warm without being heavy, polished without being pretentious. Just the kind of place where you’d feel just as comfortable grabbing a quick cortado as you would settling in for a two-hour catch-up with a friend.
So What’s Actually in the Cup?

From what we’ve read, Jabal isn’t just a pretty facade. They pride themselves on providing premium, single-origin Yemeni coffee beans handpicked from high-altitude mountain farms and sun-dried using methods that have been passed down for generations. The flavor profile leans into rich dried fruit, warm spices, and a subtle hint of chocolate. If you’ve only ever experienced coffee as “light roast vs. dark roast,” this is going to be a whole new conversation.

And Jabal isn’t just a coffee shop. Their OG Dearborn location is open until 2 AM on weeknights and 3 AM on weekends, making it a legitimate late-night destination. They’ve got private rooms for meetings or hangouts (which is likely why they took the full two floors here) and a full pastry program where the milk cakes and Dubai chocolate desserts have their own cult following,

We don’t know yet whether the Philly location will match Dearborn’s late-night hours, but if they do — or even come close — that alone fills a gap this neighborhood has had for a long time. A beautiful, welcoming space where you can hang out past 9 PM for just dessert? Pretty sweet!
The Yemeni Coffee Trifecta Is Real

This area of Philly may have gotten Yemeni cafes later than other areas but, now, we’re on fire!
MOTW Coffee & Pastries is already open and thriving at 2101 Market Street, as we shared last month. Haraz Coffee House is planned for 1822 Chestnut Street, right next to Boyds. And now Jabal at 1524 Chestnut brings us closer to Broad Street. Three Yemeni coffee shops, each uniquely situated across the neighborhood, each with their own vibe and personality.

What’s great about the spacing is that each one serves a different pocket of the neighborhood — MOTW anchors the Market Street corridor, Haraz will sit right in the heart of Chestnut Street next to Boyds, and Jabal brings the energy closer to Broad. No overlap, no competition for the same block — just more options for all of us, depending on where we are and what we’re in the mood for. You know we LOVE our options (and our coffee!)
Looking Ahead to Fall

Jabal’s website lists a fall 2026 opening but construction is always a wild ride and renderings can change so our fingers are crossed as hard as possible! And this stretch of Chestnut between 15th and 16th has been on fire with new openings, and Jabal is going to add something genuinely different to an already great block.
We’ll be tracking construction progress closely, and we’ll update you as things start moving. If you spot any activity at 1524 Chestnut Street, do drop us a line at rittenhouseramblings@gmail.com!
