In & Out: Brooks Brothers’ Set To Depart Rittenhouse After Nearly Three Decades As Mitchell & Ness Makes Its Way Over
The dress and casual-wear brand that’s been in the area since 1974 departs its majestic 1513 Walnut location on June 28th.
After nearly three decades in the neighborhood Brooks Brothers is closing its doors at 1513 Walnut Street on June 28th as Mitchell & Ness moves its flagship brand from across Broad.

The iconic menswear retailer has been part of the Rittenhouse fabric since 1997, though its Philadelphia roots actually stretch back even further – the company first set up shop in Center City in 1974 at 15th and Chestnut, just steps away from its current location. For generations, Brooks Brothers has been the local go-to destination for everything from interview suits to weekend khakis, a reliable constant in our ever-evolving retail landscape, and super convenient.

But this is the beginning of a new chapter: Mitchell & Ness, the Philadelphia-born vintage sports apparel company, will be taking over the space. The move represents a major expansion: This flagship store will be quadruple the size of their current location at 1306 Walnut Street, where they’ve been since 2021.

In a way, it’s kind of fitting as there’s been a shift in Walnut Street retail toward experiential shopping and trendier, lifestyle-focused brands. With the highly anticipated World of Flight store set to embody this trend completely, it makes total sense that Mitchell & Ness would want to position itself closer to a shopping corridor that’s increasingly defined by sneaker culture and athleisure.
World of Flight, JD Sports, New Balance, the incoming sneaker boutique Bullseye, PLUS athleisure darlings like Alo Yoga, Lululemon, and Vuori? Mitchell & Ness fits right into this ecosystem – they’re all brands that blur the lines between athletic wear, street style, and lifestyle shopping. It’s retail that’s as much about the experience and the culture as it is about the clothes themselves.

We were really, really, really hoping that Brooks Brothers would stay in the neighborhood but alas, the lovely staff said it wasn’t happening. We’ll miss Brooks Brothers’ preppy, polished window displays and great team members, and, in particular, being a place one could get good-looking button-downs and polished outfits for weddings, job interviews, and more. They WILL be sorely missed.
